2021 Application guidelines

Franco-Japanese joint scholarship program
by Fondation Pasteur Japon and the French Government 2021(2021-2022)
(French Government Scholarship Program)

The Fondation Pasteur Japon organizes, in cooperation with the French Embassy in Japan, the Franco-Japanese joint scholarship program for Japanese students who wish to conduct research activities at the Institut Pasteur for the purpose of developing Franco-Japanese cooperation in the field of medical science research.

The application requirements for this year are as follows, so please apply by the deadline.

[Required Qualification of the applicant]

  • Target students: enrolled in master's or doctoral programs
  • Age condition: born after January 1st 1991
  • Must be accepted or invited by the Head of the Research Unit of the Institut Pasteur in France or a responsible person in charge.
  • Must be registered with a French higher educational institution (university or Grande École)
  • Research fields: All research fields conducted at the Institut Pasteur in France

[Number of dispatched students]

Up to 2 persons per year

[Dispatch period and scholarship (only for those who can start in 2021)]

There are three options:

<Scholarship for Master's program students>
This is a scholarship for students who wish to enter a French Master's program.

  • As a general rule, from September 2021 up to 10 months
  • French government scholarship (100 euros per month ) plus 600 euros per month from the Fondation Pasteur Japon

<General scholarship for PhD students: Regular stay type>
This is a scholarship for students wishing to stay in France and receive research guidance as a part of their doctoral program. Registration at a French university is mandatory.

  • As a general rule, after April 2021, minimum 6 months up to 18 months
  • French government scholarship (310 euros per month ) plus 750 euros per month from the Fondation Pasteur Japon

<Scholarship for doctoral students who conduct research training>
This is a scholarship for doctoral students who belong to a doctoral program at a Japanese university and conduct research training in France for a minimum of 15 days up to 6 months.
The student will conduct research training for up to 6 months at the Institut Pasteur. There is no obligation to enroll in a French university.

  • As a general rule, starting after April 2021, up to 6 months
  • French government scholarship (754 euros per month) plus 950 euros per month from the Fondation Pasteur Japon

In any of the above cases, social insurance premiums shall be borne in full by French government.
The round-trip economy class airfare between Japan and France shall be borne, within the limit of 1, 200 euros, by the Fondation Pasteur Japon.

[Obligations in order to receive a scholarship]

Throughout the period of dispatch, the student must concentrate on research based on the research plan prepared at the Institut Pasteur under instructions from the supervisor of the scholarship.

Submit an interim report 3 months and 6 months after the start of the dispatch period, and a report on the research results (research outline) to the Fondation Pasteur Japon within two months after the end of the dispatch period (in Japanese and French or English)

[Selection method]

Pursuant to the French government scholarship guidelines for international student application

[Selection schedule and result notification]

  • September 20th 2020: French government scholarship 2021-2022 online application acceptance starts.
  • November 20th 2020: Deadline for online application registration
  • Late November 2020 to Early January 2021: First selection with document review
  • Late January 2021: Second selection with interview (in Tokyo or online)
  • Mid. February 2021: Notification of final examination result by e-mail

[Application documents to be submitted to the Fondation Pasteur Japon]

  • Copy of the French Government Scholarship Application (PDF)
  • Copies of the documents specified as documents to be submitted in the French Government Scholarship Application Guideline (such as a letter of recommendation, academic record, academic transcript, research plan, or photo in the form of PDF or JPEG)
  • Letter of acceptance or invitation from the Head of the Research Unit of the Institut Pasteur or a responsible person in charge (in French or English) in PDF format
  • If the letter of acceptance or invitation does not meet the application deadline, an interim report on acceptance or a document showing the history of negotiations in PDF or JPEG
  • Achievements (in French or English) in PDF format

[Others]

  • This program cannot be used together with fellowships other than French government scholarships during the dispatch period under this program.
  • Please arrange your own visa and travel procedures for France.
  • The student must sign a training agreement (Convention de stage) established by the Institut Pasteur before moving to France.
