Home > About Fondation Pasteur Japon － Greetings from the chairperson
It is a great honor for me to be the new Chairperson of the Fondation Pasteur Japon. I would like to start by extending my thanks to all the members of FPJ for this privilege. Their commitment is essential in order to strengthen the Institut Pasteur's presence in Japan.
The current global health crisis serves as a sharp reminder that international scientific collaboration between major research countries is the compulsory response to global health challenges. In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, I trust that the Institut Pasteur has demonstrated its crucial role in contributing to public health worldwide. However, in order to address global health issues for the benefit of citizens around the world, no single entity can act and be effective on its own. By concentrating resources and then distributing the benefits in the most efficient manner possible, international partnerships with both academia and industry are clearly necessary.
I would therefore like to draw the attention of the Japanese people to the fact that, by supporting the Fondation Pasteur Japon, they are also safeguarding their own interests.
In 2019, the first call for postdoctoral fellowships co-funded by the Fondation Pasteur Japon, the Institut Pasteur and the French Embassy in Japan enabled a doctoral student from the University of Tsukuba, Perpétue Vincent, to join Dr. Yusuke Shimakawa's team at the Institut Pasteur to develop a rapid diagnostic technique for hepatitis B.
In addition, since 2018, the Institut Pasteur has been involved with two international joint research laboratories at Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo. The success of these ambitious partnerships can be measured, for example, by the publication of a major paper on dengue infection (https://hal-pasteur.archives-ouvertes.fr/pasteur-02003844: Akiyoshi Senda, Anavaj Sakuntabhai, Shinako Inaida, Yoann Teissier, Fumihiko Matsuda, et al.. Estimating Frequency of Probable Autochthonous Cases of Dengue, Japan. Emerging Infectious Diseases, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018, 24 (9), pp.1705-1708).
With generous support from donors and event sponsors, the Fondation Pasteur Japon and the Institut Pasteur are eager to launch more collaborations with both academic and industrial partners in Japan and Asia. The Institut Pasteur has already established important partnerships with major Japanese companies in several key fields of health, such as immunology and medical imaging. By building upon the success of these agreements, the Institut Pasteur aims to develop a common long-term strategy with Japanese companies, and I envision a key role for the Fondation Pasteur Japon within this roadmap.
